Mysterious Tropical Fruit

We fished this out of the river in Hawaii. I know our hostess, Genna, had a name for it, but I don't remember what it was.
She said we could eat it.
So I tried.
But I wasn't sure what part to eat. I ate some seeds, which were rather sour, and then I tried to bite the side of the fruit. It was like trying to bite through the sole of my sandal.
Hmmm.
I think I'll stick with bananas.
Do you like tropical fruit?
What's your favorite?

It's a passionfruit. You don't eat the skin, just the juice and seeds. If it was sour chances are it wasn't ripe. You don't chew the seeds they just kind of go down. Great with vanilla ice-cream - or by themselves.
